I shouldn't get into it, honestly. Whenever I start talking about it, it just gets me all worked up. Those mornings of sub-zero with heavy windblasts really change you. In fact they knock the little-life-you-have-left out of you. Months of frigid dark skies with brief appearances of overcast sun that sets at 4pm can take a real toll on life. This relentless abuse of winter hits everyone. We get antsy and depressed. We begin to lose faith in the seasons changing. Indeed, Jack Frost's mission to disrupt life doesn't stop with nature. Our inner core, our soul and hearts are affected as we carry the winter within us, making us fragile, weak and tiresome. And while we’re down, winter plays some dirty tricks on us, which we ever-so-willingly fall for. That warm weekend in late February, we are so quick to seize it! We go out and try to get an early start on spring. I admit there have been a few times I walked in the park, amidst melting snow mounds and through muddy puddles, believing to be at the helm of Nature’s great reawakening. I couldn't help but laugh at old Groundhog along the way, telling him that he'd been wrong this time. Yet after only a few days, that cold front moves in once again from Canada and freezes the ground overnight. We awake once again to this recurring nightmare. The optimism for an early springtime is easily crushed by the reality of single blustery day. High in the teens with an 80% chance of snow… Bundling up this side of winter never has been so painful.
Luckily, winter never lasts forever. It’s late March! Now that I can hear the birds, feel the sun and not see my breath, I feel that a change is finally happening. For some, this change doesn't come easy, as many have ridden out spring fever with distrust for it. "How do you know it won't just snow tomorrow?" I've heard people ask to a fearlessly sprouting daffodil. Indeed, a long winter can last even longer if you let it last inside of you. If we carry winter’s cold within our hearts then it is certain we will miss all of the gifts that await us. Bound we are to be victims of evil Jack Frost. Let it not happen to us! Now that Nature has finally warmed up to us, shouldn't we at least try warm up to her too?
